Nomura Research Institute (NRI) conducted a survey on ChatGPT usage from September 7–8, 2024, targeting 15–69-year-old residents in the Kanto region. The results reveal an increase in ChatGPT recognition rates from 68.8% in June 2023 to 72.2%, while usage rates rose from 15.4% to 20.4%.
Notably, the survey highlights significant growth among middle-aged men (40s, 50s) and young women (20s, 30s), even as younger men (20s, 30s) show usage stabilization, suggesting this group may be approaching peak adoption.
Concerns regarding ChatGPT in workplace settings remain, with “inaccurate responses” (47.7%) and “over-reliance on AI, reducing independent thinking” (39.6%) among the main issues reported. However, concerns over independent thinking have decreased by 2.8% since the previous survey, reflecting a possible shift in understanding and acceptance of AI technology among users.
Regarding workplace use, “summarizing texts” rose by 4.8% to 31.4%, indicating increased use of ChatGPT in this area. However, using ChatGPT as a “replacement for human interaction” declined by 4.3%, with notable decreases in the restaurant, hospitality, healthcare, and welfare sectors. NRI suggests that while automation is progressing, ChatGPT’s limitations in conversational roles might be shaping these expectations.
NRI concludes that while ChatGPT adoption is growing across diverse demographics, users are developing a more realistic understanding of AI’s capabilities. Technological advancements may further broaden usage possibilities, though shifts in user expectations will likely continue alongside these developments.
